All About the Penelope Barker House in Edenton, NC

History of the Penelope Barker House

The initial construction of this home has been traced all the way back to 1782; it started off as a simple parlor and hallway; however, by the year 1840, three other additions had been made.  This home served as the primary residence for Thomas and Penelope Barker; after they both passed away, Thomas in 1789 and Penelope in 1796, the Barker House remained uninhabited until the year 1830, when it was purchased by Augustus Moore. His family and descendents lived there until Haywood Phthisic bought it in 1952; he was one of the first individuals to start renovating the house and transforming it into a historical landmark.  The Barker House was deede to the Edenton Historical Commission in 1992; today, it contains three floors, eight fireplaces, and resides on the banks of the picturesque Albemarle Sound.  On its grounds are the only two remaining cannons that originated in Edenton during the Civil War, as well as other preserved artifacts.

About Thomas and Penelope Barker

Thomas Barker moved to North Carolina in 1734 to study law; he married the lovely Penelope Craven in 1756. Penelope Barker made a name for herself in history by organizing the Edenton Tea Party, which was a resolution not to buy any British goods that required them to pay taxes.  This was the first ever political movement by women in the Colonies.
