  1. Hiking & Biking

The numerous trails of Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge are ideal for hiking and biking.  Make your way throughout this gorgeous area to admire the magnificent Pungo Lake or take a stroll along the famous Charles Kuralt Trail, named after an esteemed local broadcast journalist, to see additional North Carolina refuges.  Many observation points are strung along these trails as well, perfect for taking pictures of the abounding scenery and wildlife.

  1. Hunting

There are many opportunities for hunting in the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.  Deer hunting is the most popular; you can also hunt smaller, upland game, such as raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, beavers, and quail. They also have a fixed season for waterfowl hunting, during which you can hunt woodcock, ducks, geese, rails, and doves. 

  1. Wildlife Observation

North Carolina is home to all kinds of animal species, both big and small!  The varied habitats of the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge include marshes, swamps, flatwoods, forests, scrubs, shoreline, and open water, providing the perfect environment for a wide range of organisms.  This refuge contains over 40 species of mammals, 40 species of reptiles, and 36 species of amphibians.  Some of the most abundant wildlife found in this area include red wolves, black bears, American alligators, and tundra swan.  Look to the skies to catch a glimpse of the many birds darting around; over 200 species of birds populate this area as well.

  1. Fishing

There are multiple locations for fishing in this wildlife refuge, including canals, streams, ponds, and lakes.  Pungo Lake and New Lakes are available for fishing in this area from the beginning of March and runs til the end of October; all other areas are open year-round during daylight hours.  Some of the most frequent species of fish caught here include catfish, black crappie, and several species of sunfish.
