All About the Edenton Cotton Mill Museum of History
History of the Edenton Cotton Mill
The Edenton Cotton Mill was created in the late 1800s and soon became one of the most profitable institutions in the state. This booming mill provided a way for the numerous local cotton farmers to market their products. Due to its immense success, many other extensions were added to this brick masterpiece throughout the years. The Edenton Cotton Mill remained in local ownership all the way until the 1990’s, when it was gifted to Preservation North Carolina.
History of the Edenton Cotton Mill Village
The Edenton Cotton Mill Village was built to provide the many mill workers with a place to live. Over 70 homes were created for these hardworking individuals, most of which were simple structures; however, the managers resided in nicer homes that reflected a Colonial Revival style. Some of these homes were adjoined, like duplexes, and others were freestanding. Even though some of the years left it uninhabited, the village remained a friendly, urban neighborhood reflecting optimism for its future. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
