History of the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site

This distinctive piece of land is the exact spot where Sir Walter Raleigh helped establish the first English colonization in the New World in the late 16th century; however, this early colony of 116 people mysteriously disappeared, creating one of the most bizarre mysteries that has ever happened throughout history.  In addition to this eerie occurrence, the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site played a key role in other important historic events as well.  During the Civil War time period, this site was home to the prestigious Freedmen’s Colony, a safe place for African-American families to hide during danger.  This site has also undergone several successful archeological digs as well, giving insight into the lives and stories of these past individuals.
